Valle de los Lagos at Chirripo National Park

The Valle de los Lagos gives life to the Chirripó Pacífico River that little by little joins other rivers changing its name successively to Río Chibugra, Río General and Diquís or Río Grande de Térraba that finally flows into the Pacific.

These lakes are located practically next to Cerro Chirripo, at an altitude of 3555 meters above sea level. It is formed by 3 lakes staggered in terraces. The 3 lakes are called Lagos Chirripo, but the largest of them is called Lago Grande or Lago San Juan.
Having the biggest of them a depth of 22 meters, they have a total extension of 8 hectares with an approximate temperature of 14 °C.

At the bottom of these lakes, sediments have been found with carbon content that date back 4000 years! proving that there were forest fires in that area in those days, probably caused by natural phenomena or by the inhabitants of the area.

The Valley of the Lakes gives life to the Chirripó Pacific River that little by little joins other rivers changing its name successively to Chibugra River, General River and Diquís or Grande de Térraba River that finally flows into the Pacific.

Although it may not seem like it, there is a hidden trail that leads to these lakes, often ignored by hikers, possibly because many pass by the lake at night, or perhaps, they are dazzled by the magnificence of Cerro Chirripo on the horizon. However, when you enter the trail beside the lakes, remember that there is a path that leads to them.
