A Costa Rican Childhood
Pete’s story begins with a transatlantic connection. His Scottish father, serving in the Royal Air Force in England, met and married Pete’s mother. After contributing to the war effort by building runways in Burma (now Myanmar) during World War II, the couple embarked on a new adventure, eventually settling in Costa Rica. Pete was born in Costa Rica, where his father and uncles established a fishing trawler business, navigating the Pacific waters.
From the Tropics to Tennessee: A Stateside Education
The family’s journey didn’t end in Central America. They moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Pete’s mother worked at the British Consulate. At the tender age of 10, Pete was sent to St. Andrews boarding school in Tennessee. This experience marked his first encounter with cricket, a sport he learned about in a rather…memorable way.
Navigating the Vietnam Era
Following his schooling and a typing course, Pete yearned for travel, a dream seemingly out of reach. The Vietnam War loomed large, and he received a draft notice. In a protective act, his mother hid the letter. Instead of military service, Pete found himself working for the merchant navy, shipping essential supplies to the war zone. This role allowed him to see the world, including a memorable stint in San Francisco where he enjoyed the vibrant music scene while his ship was delayed due to a pilot strike. Finding Roots in England
Pete’s mother eventually returned to England, and he followed, initially planning a short stay. However, life had other plans. He found work as a typesetter, eventually landing at the Somerset County Gazette in Taunton. He recounts working the night shift for 30 years, a role so solitary that many of his colleagues barely knew he existed. He humorously suggests that he might have been kept on primarily as a nightwatchman to lower insurance premiums.
A Life Beyond the Gazette
Beyond his work at the Gazette, Pete dedicated his time to the Probation Service, where he continues to work part-time as a sessional supervisor even after 34 years. At the Gazette, Pete met and married Lisa, a police officer. Together they built a family, welcoming their daughter Kathryn and son Karl.
Family and Gratitude
Now, Pete enjoys spending his free time at the gym, walking his dog, and traveling in his camper van. Family remains a central part of his life. While his daughter Kathryn lives in England with his granddaughter, his son Karl resides in New Jersey with Pete’s grandson, Callum. Pete hopes that the allure of Somerset will one day bring his children back to England.

Pete expresses immense gratitude to the NHS (National Health Service) for successfully treating him for several serious health conditions, including skin cancer and liver issues. He emphasizes the importance of early detection and is actively involved in a Patient Participation Group with Predictive Health Intelligence (PHI), contributing to efforts to identify individuals at risk of liver disease before symptoms arise.
