Returning to Costa Rica: A Driverless Future

Costa Rica is calling! After a brief hiatus, I’m eagerly anticipating my return to the land of pura vida. There’s something special about hearing “Bienvenidos a Costa Rica” and even navigating the usual airport bustle – it signals that I’m back in my happy place.

Technology Contrasts: Silicon Valley vs. Costa Rica

During my time away, I experienced something quite futuristic: driverless cabs in the U.S., courtesy of companies like Waymo. The seamless navigation, the AI-powered precision – it was truly impressive. Every street, alley, and curb meticulously mapped, resulting in effortless and safe transport. It felt like stepping into a sci-fi movie!

But this got me thinking: could driverless technology ever truly take hold in Costa Rica? While Costa Ricans are generally tech-savvy and eager to embrace new gadgets, the introduction of autonomous vehicles might be a different story.

The Potential Challenges of Driverless Cars

Imagine the reaction of local taxi drivers, pirate taxis, and even Uber drivers! It’s not hard to envision resistance to these robocars, potentially leading to some very “Tico” protests. There’s a certain charm to the organized chaos of Costa Rican traffic that a perfectly programmed AI might find challenging to navigate.

The Costa Rican Allure

Despite the occasional inconvenience or quirk, there’s a reason why I, and so many others, keep returning to Costa Rica. While discussing the country with a longtime expat friend recently, we found ourselves commiserating over familiar frustrations like bureaucratic processes and the fluctuating exchange rate of the colón against the U.S. dollar. However, those minor annoyances quickly faded as we reminisced about the countless breathtaking locations we’ve explored throughout the country.

The Irresistible Charms of Costa Rica

  • Pristine Beaches: From the popular shores of Manuel Antonio, known for its stunning combination of rainforest and coastline, to the hidden gems along the Nicoya Peninsula, the beaches are simply unparalleled.
  • Lush Greenery: The vibrant rainforests, cloud forests, and national parks teem with wildlife and offer endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. Costa Rica boasts roughly 5% of the world’s biodiversity, making it a true natural paradise.
  • Friendly Locals: The warmth and generosity of the Ticos are infectious, creating a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

Embracing “Tico Time”

In just a few days, I’ll be back at 9 degrees north latitude, ready to embrace the slower pace of life. The 112-mile journey from the airport to my home, via a combination of taxi and bus, often takes about as long as the entire 3,000+ mile flight from Los Angeles. And that’s perfectly fine. It’s a welcome reminder to slow down, decompress, and reconnect with the essence of “Tico time.”
