Earthquake Watch: Monday, September 29, 2025

Here at Explore Costa Rica, we know that being prepared is key to enjoying your vacation. While Costa Rica is known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and incredible biodiversity, it’s also located in a seismically active zone. Recent seismic activity around the globe, including some felt in Costa Rica, serves as a good reminder to stay informed.

Global Earthquake Activity: A Snapshot

On September 29, 2025, seismic monitors recorded a total of 541 earthquakes worldwide. While most were minor, here’s a breakdown of the larger events:

  • Magnitude 5+: 2 earthquakes
  • Magnitude 4+: 46 earthquakes
  • Magnitude 3+: 109 earthquakes
  • Magnitude 2+: 384 earthquakes

The total seismic energy released was estimated at 2.1 x 1013 joules. To put that in perspective, that’s equivalent to approximately 5,125 tons of TNT! Thankfully, no earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher were recorded.

Largest Earthquakes in the Past 24 Hours

Here’s a look at the ten largest earthquakes recorded globally in the 24 hours:

Top 10 Earthquakes (Largest Magnitude)

Earthquakes Felt and Reported

It’s important to note the distinction between earthquake magnitude and how widely an earthquake is felt. Several smaller earthquakes were reported felt by people in different locations.

Earthquakes Reported Felt by Region

  1. Costa Rica: A magnitude 4.5 earthquake was felt 48 km southwest of San Isidro.
  2. Kamchatka, Russia: A magnitude 4.7 earthquake was felt in Yelizovskiy Rayon.
  3. Murcia, Spain: A magnitude 2.7 earthquake was felt west of Murcia.
  4. Costa Rica: A magnitude 4.5 earthquake was felt 96 km south of San Jose.
  5. Other locations reporting felt earthquakes include Venezuela, Turkey, India, Chile, Indonesia, Greece, Australia and Portugal.

It’s common for areas near the epicenter of even moderate earthquakes to experience shaking. These reports highlight the importance of earthquake preparedness, even for smaller events.

Earthquake Activity in Costa Rica: What to Expect

Costa Rica is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its high seismic and volcanic activity. This is due to the interaction of several tectonic plates beneath the region. While this activity contributes to the country’s stunning landscapes and geothermal energy, it also means that earthquakes are relatively frequent.

While it’s impossible to predict exactly when and where an earthquake will occur, Costa Rica has invested in robust monitoring and early warning systems. It’s important for residents and visitors alike to be aware of basic earthquake safety measures.

Earthquake Safety Tips:

  • During an Earthquake: Stay calm, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on. If you’re outside, move away from buildings, power lines, and trees.
  • After an Earthquake: Check for injuries and damage. Be prepared for aftershocks. If you’re in a coastal area, be aware of the potential for tsunamis.
  • Preparation: Have an emergency kit with water, food, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit. Know the evacuation routes in your area.

Staying Informed

Reliable sources of information about earthquakes in Costa Rica include:

  • Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN): The National Seismological Network of Costa Rica provides real-time earthquake data and information.
  • The United States Geological Survey (USGS): For global earthquake information.

Costa Rica’s commitment to monitoring and preparedness helps to minimize the risks associated with earthquakes. By staying informed and following safety guidelines, you can enjoy all that this beautiful country has to offer with greater peace of mind.
