A Mexican tourist is recovering after a recent shark encounter near Costa Rica’s legendary Cocos Island National Park. The diver, a man in his 40s, sustained injuries to his scalp and face during a dive at Roca Sucia, a well-known dive site, located approximately 100 feet (30 meters) below the surface.
The Incident and Rescue
The incident occurred midday on a Saturday while the diver was exploring the vibrant marine environment. Reports indicate that, in addition to his injuries, the shark damaged the diver’s air hoses, necessitating a rapid ascent to the surface. Swift action by Costa Rican firefighters ensured the diver received immediate on-site medical attention. They stabilized his condition and controlled the bleeding, preparing him for the long journey back to the mainland. Due to Cocos Island’s remote location, some 300 miles (500 kilometers) off the coast of Puntarenas, the boat trip back is estimated to take between 36 and 40 hours. He is expected to receive further treatment at a hospital in Puntarenas upon arrival.
Circumstances of the Encounter
Preliminary reports suggest that the shark’s reaction may have been triggered by an ongoing marine tagging effort rather than an act of aggression. It is believed the diver’s mask played a significant role in mitigating the severity of his injuries. While the specific species of shark involved has not yet been officially identified, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and to assess any potential risks for future visitors to the area.
Cocos Island: A World-Class Diving Destination
Cocos Island National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unparalleled biodiversity and attracts divers from around the globe. It is particularly famous for its large populations of sharks, including scalloped hammerheads, whale sharks, and white-tip reef sharks, as well as rays, dolphins and numerous species of fish. Encounters such as this one are relatively rare. A previous fatal shark attack occurred in 2017, involving a U.S. diver and a tiger shark. Park rangers emphasize that the vast majority of interactions are safe, provided divers adhere to established guidelines, such as maintaining a safe distance from marine life and avoiding any actions that might startle or provoke the animals.
Current Status and Safety Recommendations
Despite the ordeal, the diver is reported to be in good spirits and his condition is stable. Authorities are committed to providing updates on his recovery, as well as the ongoing review of safety protocols within the reserve.
