Laguna Ditkevi at Chirripo National Park

Located at 3580 meters above sea level, with an extension of 1.2 hectares, with a depth of 7 meters, it seems that it is not so deep, however if you go a little deeper you will see.

This lagoon is 3.5 km from Refugio Base Crestones, about 2.8 hours round trip, when you arrive at Valle de los Conejos, you will head northwest on a trail that will climb a little and then descend to the lagoon. Note the difference here between lake and lagoon.

Once you return from the lagoon, you can either head to Cerro Terbi or to Base Crestones.

Ditkevi means “a place to get closer to God” of Bribi origin, indigenous people of the eastern zone of Chirripó, it was something like a natural altar to perform spiritual rituals, and of course, when you see it you will understand why. According to their stories, if you get into the lagoon being impure or having committed a sin, a kind of dragon would appear and swallow you, but if it considered that you could be forgiven, it would bring you back alive.

No doubt once you get to the Ditkevi Lagoon you will be left breathless by its magnificence, on a clear day you will want to stay there for hours enjoying its beauty, its cold waters (about 14 degrees) and the desolate landscape formed by glaciers thousands of years ago.

If you are going to enter the lagoon, take off your shoes (obviously) and you will see thousands of aquatic insects on your feet.

For my personal impression, Ditkevi Lagoon is the most beautiful lagoon in Chirripó National Park.
